A Beggars Shame

Eyes of disgust watch with disdain as i ask "how much is it again?"
Clothes torn (a little), hair matted (alot)
Pennies, nickles and dimes I count them one more time, I'm short my hunger is loud, my stomach growls. Ashamed and distraught the shelters are locked, matters not lines are too long.
Vendor looks both saddened and disgusted, he says step away please I have paying customers.
Embarrassed by the loudness in his rebuke I slink away shame holds my head steady, eyes down, hurt and desperate, stomach growls reminding me i haven't ate yet.
What else to do but steal and lie and find somewhere safe to sleep tonight.
