An Ode to Henry

I heard that he had passed alone in the darkness of the night the strength of youth long gone his once rich and golden crown turned to grey and white his once strong and youthful body broken bent and maimed little more than memories left of battles he’d once fought.
He  waited for judgments to be passed on friend and foe alike of times when with his youthful pride he would
stand up tall and shout “No one can stand before me here“ as stalked within
the halls.
It was hard to know what I should do with you your dapper style so bold and brusque it made me wonder who I was
and who you were
I’d sit and listen and question how you spoke convincingly as if you did not believe in yourself but who was I to question why and so instead I walked away.
And I left you there  alone with me not knowing that you'd rather die than be left to yourself  to question why it was  that you were you.
And in the shadows of his youth he claimed his courage knew no fear yet in this shifting darkness  to himself and others he had lied as He Hid Himself away  beneath rivers of gold and red and white.

The spoils of his many wins poured endlessly through him to drown away the fact that he feared far more than he could say yet as he sought to find the strength in ways that would not work he who once so many feared gently touched me as he passed.
Then those self-same rivers of red and gold and white in that final darkness drowned him  and stole away all light it was in the empty darkness I think of him and cry.
