BAD HABITS: DRINKING
Just a sip—
It won’t hurt.
Maybe just one more;
I’m still sober, still alert.
You know what?
It isn’t bad to drink half a bottle—
I’ll still be okay;
I’m in control; I won’t throttle.
I’ve polished off half,
And I’m still doing fine.
Maybe I can try the rest—
I’m good; can’t be confined.
Wow, I did it.
Can’t believe I’ve drunk the whole thing.
And they said it would get you drunk—
You won’t see clearly; you won’t even think.
My friends are coming over tonight;
Maybe I should buy a case.
They won’t mind a bottle each—
They’ll be happy; drinking while we play Space.
See? I told you:
We’re all still sober.
Even Jack wants us to get more—
More for this joyful October.
They dared me to drink three bottles,
And I’m still good—
Just a little woozy,
Can’t really stand; unable to walk as I should.
It’s all fine;
At least I’m more talkative than before.
My friends seem to like the new me,
Expressing myself; letting out a roar.
I closed my eyes for just a bit,
Only to wake up in a ditch.
My friends were nowhere to be found,
But I’m still in control—I did not switch.
I went home to eat;
The food seemed unappetizing.
The drink as well—
Only the craving for beer kept rising.
It’s been six months now,
And I’m still doing well.
I haven’t become addicted—
Life’s good; all is swell.
Though I lost my job,
Got kicked out of school,
My girlfriend left for her own safety,
I still know what I’m doing—I’m no fool.
I don’t need AA,
I don’t need my family’s support.
I can quit any time I want—
If I say it’s today, I’ll stop; I will abort.
Bad habits begin as whispers, soft and slight;
A tiny choice made once can grow into the night.
If you choose a path that harms your life’s design,
One small step can chain you—seek help before you’re confined.
If you’ve already started, don’t wait to seek aid;
Ask for support, pause the cycle—don’t let it invade.
You don’t have to face it alone; there’s help and care to lend—
Recovery starts by reaching out and choosing to mend.
