While working in Alaska a while back, I received some tips about the bears. Tips that I wish to pass on.
Alaska has two main predator bears, the brown bear and the grizzly bear. The brown bear is more docile, and is mainly a vegetarian. However, the grizzly is aggressive and mainly a carnivore.
For protection, they suggest you carry some pepper spray and wear some type of small bells on you. It turns out that grizzlies will turn away from the sound of the bells, and if they do get close, they definitely don't like pepper spray in their snouts and eyes, and will flee.
An additional tip is to be able to recognize their stools. The brown bear's stool will be light brown in color, have nuts and berries in it, and smell like fruit and berries. The grizzly Bear's stool, on the other hand, will be a very dark brown, have bells in it, and smell like pepper spray.
