To those who said to me "Teach me how to be black",
being different is not something that can be taught
but it is a reminder of everything beautiful this earth will ever know.
Let me begin to say
I am proud of the skin
that I am in.
Be we small, medium or large, tall skinny or fat.
I am proud of my heritage
and I am not giving my black back.
We are sweet as sugarcane, skin black like soil and eyes shining as a coin.
I'm glowing as the morning sunshine and slow as the evening sunset.
Healthy as a lemon tree,
strong as a stallion and nothing can prove me wrong.
I'm black and proud,
I can read what's written!
Speak what's spoken!
I can do whatever can be done!
I'm black and proud.
Despite the stares we get from people.
I won’t let anyone get me down, put me down, take away my self-esteem or push me around.
I’m inspired by my birthright,
by my heritage
and above all our God.
I won’t let prejudice or negativity hold me back
I’m intelligent and also
talented.
I’m stable.
It’s true I’m stronger than you.
I cry when I’m sad,
shout when I’m mad,
Laugh when happy.
I’m black and proud
