I slowly sip my coffee,
Carefully watching him.
His eyes speak of glory,
And an ongoing battle within.
“I see worlds and starts,”
He inches a little closer,
“I also see smiles and scars.”
“Oh darling I am bitter!”
Silence dares to take place,
Leaving space to read.
He observes my face,
Fearing I might admit defeat.
“My coffee is black.” I say,
He blinks up at me,
Reclines back as if to pray,
But smiles in triumphant glee.
I wonder if his literariness
Could ever explain to me,
How is it that I enjoy bitterness,
Although it almost tastes so sweet!
