What does being black mean to me?
Well it means unique, standing out in the
crowd
It means survival, praying for guidance
Before stepping out of my own home
Being born with a skin far different from
the rest of the world
Is beautiful but also very critical.
I have learnt that being black doesn’t mean ugly
Or bad or horrible or wicked or terrible or
any of those things that they have called us in the past
It just means we have been misunderstood by the society
because society sees us as a threat to mankind.
The insults that people give me for being black,
Can never stop me from being great or unique.
They can’t criticise me for being me.
I was born a black woman.
Everyday I walk on my path to a better life,
I see people criticize me because of my color,
I see people hate and spit in my face because i'm different
But they forget that the difference is beautiful.
It’s unique and it is flawless.
Black don’t crack, black don’t rot,
Black doesn't fade, black is flawless.
I can stand tall and say that I am proud to be a black woman,
and nobody can take that identity away from me.
