But a Distant Memory.

A photograph once taken of a time so long ago.
Soldiers standing side by side and we miss that time so.

Though bullets filled the sand and sky, we never filled with fear.
Now years have passed and we still relive it, we drown ourselves in beer.

But the whiskey we save for hard times, when the nightmares just seem too real.
And the poison they call medicine we force down our throats so we can't feel.

A simple thing like a car back fire can trigger the need for this.
Despite all the problems we have from it, it is a time we all miss.

We sleep with weapons under our pillows, pistols, rifles and knives.
Just a small insight into the Hell we lived that forever had changed our lives.

Awaken in the morning to hear these strange civilian sounds.
Where once we woke to gunfire and explosives landing all around.

What can we do to change ourselves into the souls that we once were?
It's all but too apparent that we won't be the same as we were before.

Bullets filled that sand and we're ripping through the air.
How was it there in that forsaken land that we lived freely without a care?

We know we will never be the same, we know that we've forever changed.
And we're reminded every time you stare at us, the mentally deranged.
