Child's Play

It was dry and cold that dark winter day
When we were sent upstairs to play.

In your old bedroom was a large heating vent
To the kitchen below was where it went.

You removed the grate that covered the vent
In your bedroom where we’d been sent.

Then Mom looked in and saw us there
Bouncing on your bed without a care.

Next to your bed was the open hole
You’d said to jump it was the goal.

But Mom yelled at us to cover that hole
Or we might fall through to the floor below.

She yelled again then shut the door
I dropped you didn’t then I hit the floor.

Ten feet down from where I fell
They thought I’d died they couldn’t tell.

Three years old and on the floor I lay
In a pool of blood to my parents dismay.

Dad picked me up limp in his arms was I
In the snow he ran knowing I could die.

I did not die that cold winter day
But I wish that I had every time I pray.

The fall didn’t kill me but what it did
Was to make me a confused and angry kid.

And nothing changed as I grew to old age
Most of my life was ruined fighting back this rage.

So why do you think that I’m going to Hell
When you made the hole through which I fell.

It was dry and cold that dark winter day
When we were sent upstairs to play.
