Comforting arms embrace me
Soft cloth brushes against my dirty skin
Perfume wafts into my burning nostrils
Tears dry up as the woman gently pats my head
I squeeze tighter, not wanting this blissful moment to end
Smoke rises on this chilled morning
Embers begin to die out
The screaming sirens turn off
Two adults are confirmed dead on scene
Life hits me as I remember the fire
Thoughts of my parents coax me to turn around
A soothing voice pasifies my anguished nerves
Words of reassurance replace my negative feelings
Praying for a hopeful outcome
I squeeze her body tighter
Unknown vocabulary reaches my ears as a man talks to the woman
I sit patiently awaiting my parents return
The man looks in pain as he talks to her
As his mouth moves, her head shakes in unison
The woman makes her way over to me
Her pearl smile calms my racing heart
Warmth engulfs me as she pulls me into her chest
I can hear sobs from behind
Her voice cracks as she tries to speak
Telling me I am in her care
One question remains in my childish mind
When will I be able to see my parents again?
