Draft on a poem - experience as a nurse
The RN - modern healthcare -
Driving in - heart beginning to race
As you think of the workload and what will be the pace
You get there as patients start to wake
Sun rising .. with chaos knowing time to ensue
The noise hits you - like sounds you could hear at a zoo
From call lights, alarms, the conversation's of 5 reports, and the frequent known yells
Of patients who've been there too long but seem to have slipped through the cracks
With no other option besides 18 meds a morning, countless apple sauces and a mundane lifestyle
Yet the hospital employees still trying to display there best plastic smile
The doctors prescribing every vitamin under the sun
Crushed into one
Will it be the final fix or another pill added to the never ending pile
7 AM - Nurses begin passing medications on 5 patients each
As 5 doctors including residents and interns round for hours to teach
The complaints and things that need fixing start to grow
Nurses messaging looking for the fix but only to wait
You start noticing that familiar sensation —thoughts speeding up, a million things demanding your attention, your mind running faster than the moment itself
And suddenly, everything feels heavier than it did an hour ago.
10 AM - Nurses are finally finishing there morning med pass and bedside care
It's a new healthcare without much communicationThey know soon enough the computer screen will flood with confusing orders - with no organization
Orders that don’t match they're assessment of the patient they know
Now new messages sent for corrections stack the earlier morning ones with no reply
