EAST OF EDEN

while some weep for a child
the other doth complain of theirs
the former sayeth "my house like a grave"
and the latter spake, "mine like a madhouse"
so is man...never contented
the former gets a child at last
and he laughing says
"i have such a bouncing baby boy"
but the great joy lasts not
"were it girl, would be such a joy!"
and so is man, never satisfied
the latter's kids, all good and grown
time for a life on their own lead
the time for nursery is up yet
"how are we gonna cope on our own"
so is the nature of man, never contented
the former begets a baby girl,
a true reflection of her father
"she doth not look like a girl!"
"like her mother doth girls alike"
and so is man... never satisfied
human, so are we
yearning for one but many: things
a wish after, and another before
even at the break of withholding nets
and so are we ungrateful and selfish
so is man, never sated
