Fallout

The world seemed such a magical
place back then, when time would
stretch forth in the longest of strides
and the sun, yellow as a ripe lemon,
smiled a bright smile upon emerald
grasses festooned with delicate
necklaces of predawn dewdrops
gleaming like mother's polished
silverware
Back then, the air seemed cool and
crisp enough to taste, perhaps it was
lemon maringue after all?
Musical notes would surf upon waves
of scented breezes while songbirds of
motley cast and color, and an array of
(other) winged creatures, skittered
about in merry disarrayment composing
all manner of mellifluous symphonies
and delightful harmonics
Back then, youthfulness was an
established affair and children were
inclined to behave like children, and
neighborliness was inspired by genuine
friendships, and an amiable atmosphere
of camaraderie hung heavy over
communities far and wide. Candor and
joy and laughter was widespread and
openly evident in spirited eyes kindled
by enthusiasm, forbearance, gratitude
That was then.
Now, the opposite is true.
Time is measured in sprints, not
marathons. The air smells of consistent
garbage and tastes just as foul. The sun
has lost its radiant appeal while dewdrops
look as dull as cheap Chinese cutlery.
Birds and insects have become a
distraction, or an annoyance or a
pestilence. Children have become masters
and parents slaves. Neighborliness seems
something mythical. Individualism is
encouraged, no favored, no demanded
above communalism and virtues that once
thrived in shared spirit are inexorably
repudiated in blatant consideration for
abject perversions
Welcome to the twenty-first century.
