First Son

Babies are like clay
From the moment they're brought into the world
They can be molded to our ideals
For most people this is true
However for those people I'm the breaker of bad news
For I have a strange ability to see who that innocent baby will mold into
And right now this scares me the most
My wife is currently in labor
I'm awaiting my first son's arrival
As I'm waiting I become more anxious by the second
Where I am sitting is where the newborns are brought through
As I watch I see what lies for them in the future
I see a peaceful baby girl lying in her mother's arms
Sadly for her and her mom she will not see her first birthday
They walk out
Another mother walks in
This time with a son in arms
His father hugging the both of them
Their baby looks like it couldn't hurt a fly
But to their future dismay
Their son will be the ender of countless lives
A fate no parent should have to go through
I don't want to see anymore
I can't handle knowing the horrors of others
My head's down when I hear the doctor call me into the delivery room
I prepare my mind for the worst
I enter the room hearing the sound of the cry of life
We meet each other's eyes and he stops
It feels as if we stare for hours
When its only the tiniest second
Our eyes part and he clings to his mother's chest
Tears pour down my face
I'm crying tears of joy
For when I looked into my son's eyes I couldn't see into his future
This may be good or bad
But at least know I feel somewhat in control
I will strive to be the best guider, provider, and above all father for my son
