Friend

A seed of many years,
One day it bloomed in spring.
And after meeting up,
A friendship in history.
A year of spring, and seven of summer,
Our friendship grew quite strong.
Seen together twice a week,
Like sisters we grew to be.
Without warning, without autumn,
Winter set in fast.
Three long years of freezing winds,
Roads were blocked off, blocked in.
A ray of sunshine seared the snow,
A spring revitalized.
But spring was short, and winters long,
As they hung on the horizon.
A week before a special day,
Their sharp winds cut through.
Built up stress, buckets of rain,
It all exploded that day.
The budding friendship, cut off short,
Sits in freezing winter winds.
It's roots are dead, it's petals gone,
Unlikely to be born again.
In a garden of few flowers,
That flower is choked by thorns.
The thorns that lay among the soil,
Looking to choke some more.
Fourteen long years of history,
My best and longest friend.
And though she might hate me,
I think of her whenever I can.
