Gods Above

The ancients they wrote
of gods and wars and men.
Their tales twisted time;
their heroes championed
the beasts, the gods, and death.
The ancients carried stones
and built into the mountains
monuments for their own deeds.
They mastered all
and tears never left their eyes.
From lofty palaces they sang
and drank themselves into
oblivion.
From dust you have come
and to dust you shall return.
Their pillars toppled one by one
the temples fell and crushed their
gods.
Their plays were lost
their heroes died.
No more are masters of the earth
now death marches past its foes.
The gods that be
above the clouds look down and mock
mans lunacy.
