I

Goodbye world

Goodbye world
The last minutes come rolling upon my demoralized heart. There is no turning back, even in the face of my crippled, throbbing chest. My heart feels as heavy as the haversack on my back, trembling like the last flickers of a dying flame. An avalanche of feelings crashes down on me—grief and agony, anger and dejection, sorrow painted in a rainbow I cannot understand.

My trembling hand still grips the bottle that stands between my existence and death, as I try to fortify my shivering soul. Drip… drip… drip… the translating droplets mingle with my crackling tongue. A rollercoaster of briefs and memories envelops me in these final minutes of being. My nerves crawl slowly back into my skin as I gather my scattered wits.

I fight my way toward a better sight, yet my thoughts drift—distant, vague—until even a faint glimmer of hope finds no place to survive in me. I am as helpless as a dry thorn bush in the desert. Just inches lie between my thorny lips and the bottle that promises release into a world unknown, uncertain, whispering of heaven.

Reluctantly, I take a mouthful of the bitter substance—my final gulp. Pain becomes a welcomed guest as I enter the last moments of my prolonged suffering. Then the sun shatters my darkness into fragments, lifting my impending doom, illuminating the shadows of my petrified soul. At last, it arrives.

Goodbye, world.
