Grandma's Hands
Soothing and delight,
Grandma's hands—
Never loses a fight
Grandma's hands
A comfort held tight.
Grandma's hands
A love in plain sight.
My mother and I departed
When I was just three months old.
And this is how it all started—
I came to know Grandma's hands.
With her hands, she shaped me to be bold.
With her hands, she fed me.
With her hands, she brought joy and glee.
Grandma's hands taught me to crawl.
Her hands steadied my first steps,
And with her hands, she caught me each time I’d fall.
Grandma's hands pointed the way to go.
Her hands bathed me clean,
Her hands beckoned me close—
I’d come running at her call.
Her hands never let us strive
Grandma's hands worked hard each day
With her hands, she gave me a good life.
With her hands, she made me stand tall.
With her hands, she carried me through the war,
Fleeing while others left their babies behind.
With her hands, she shielded us,
Ensuring our lives would never decline.
Grandma's hands would discipline me always
And Grandma's hands would open wide,
I'd come running to embrace her each time
With her hands, she'd spend her last dime
To buy me clothes,
And with those same hands, she’d dress me.
Her hands would remove the clothes from my body,
To wash them clean each time they were dirty.
Oh, how I miss Grandma's hands,
Even now, in my thirties.
2005 was the last time I held Grandma’s hands.
She has gone to be with the Lord in Heaven.
But I will always remember Grandma's hands—For with them, I always felt grand.
