The Quiet Shine of Being
Happiness is not a sudden, blinding sun,
Nor a triumphant banner, loudly won.
It is a gentle warmth, a current deep,
The silent promise that the moments keep.
It can be found within the morning’s grace,
The first clean light upon a sleeping face;
The solid comfort of a well-worn chair,
A sudden kindness, offered unaware.
It is the echo of a hearty laugh,
The simple pleasure of a better half
Of a good story, told beneath the eaves,
The crisp, red scent of autumn-falling leaves.
It dwells not in the frantic, rushed pursuit,
But in the pause to taste the ripened fruit;
In letting go of things that grip and strain,
And welcoming the sun after the rain.
It is a choice, to see the good that lives
Within the ordinary thing life gives;
A quiet, knowing smile that softly says:
"I am content to be here in these days."
