Haunting Town

These ruins now haunt these grounds
a desolate scene.
The walls all fallen,
towers bare,
no sentries left
her people gone.
Your glories known throughout the land
with gold and silver you fixed your homes
and ivory pins for your hair.
Thine palaces were hewn
from common marble for the man,
and yet your kings reside in
chambers of no common stone.
Silk more common than wool
and laughter louder than any cry;
how quickly your ruin came to thee.
The message came that fateful day
your quivers empty
and sheaths still full,
while you were sleeping
you lost it all.
Where since had flowed like water
your peoples blood now stood.
No grave left empty
no child left to play.
The houses fell when the nails were pulled,
the palace burned
it's shadow haunting still.
And now I walk your streets alone
and marvel at thine fall;
if only not in revelry
and my children here would stay.
