Heavy is the emptiness

My heart is heavy, my soul in despair,
After the death of my little granddaughter, it was so fair.
Rays of sunlight at dawn all look the same,
But, without her, an empty void remains.
I take refuge in small moments, places, and things,
Like clouds in the sky and shiny conch shells that sing.
Bird songs and blowing winds carry my pain away,
But an ever-present sadness lingers each and every day.
No amount of joy can rise above my grief and sorrow,
No whisper of happiness to strengthen me and borrow.
A restless loneliness haunts me in lingering shades of grey,
A tragedy and deep sadness that no comfort can allay.
My anguish has no beginning and no end in sight,
Through each and every moment, I yearn for her light.
Softly, her spirit surrounds me in a compassionate embrace,
And weathers even the deepest depths of my darkest place.
