I reach from under my metal grate
That protects me in my hole
Where metal walls separate me from myself
With fear I tremble there not knowing what to do
My long thin pale arms and hands
So long outside the light
Glow against the black night sky
For I dare not yet expose myself
To the brightness of the day
Where those that threaten me
Even those I struggle to love but I lack the heart
In my weak and wrinkled form
Cause me to crawl back into my hole
Until my curiosity draws me out
And I find I can rise up again
I search to find you somewhere in the dark
Because I know that you’ll be waiting there
In your colours oh so bright
When I finally find you there I long to feel your touch
Because your colours blend with mine
As I reach deep into my darkness
My own colours begin to seep through
This broken frame of white black and grey
And we create colours of our own
That fill my heart so very small indeed
And as they do my heart begins to grow inside
And my body begins to glow
Until the night ends
When I next rise up from my hole
To the newborn morning’s song
I bask there in splendid colours of red blue and gold
Because now I no longer fear the light
That bares to all both kind and mean
My broken dreams, my losses and failed sacrifice
You drew out in me the hope to feel alive
And no longer hide my head in death
Where all that I could see was black white and grey
Instead I dance within your arms
Throughout both day and night
As our colours merge and move within
And reflect our inner lights.
