I was entering a classroom with speechless students."Why aren't they saying anything? I thought this was college, these grown folks, and they acting like speechless teenagers from high school, " I said to myself. But they were not the only ones that were silent. I was silent as well. I did not open my mouth. I was scared to open my mouth. I was beginning to act like a speechless teenager too. I was already sitting in my seat and noticing that everyone was gawking at me. I hate when people gawk at me. "Why the fuck they are asses staring at me?" I said in my head. The classroom was extremely silent. No one said anything to one another. I thought that was strange because every class I had taken in college, I would enter a classroom with a bunch of students conversing with each other. But this classroom I entered was not like that.
"Where the professor at?" I said to myself folding my arms. 15 minutes later the professor arrived.
"Hello class, my name is professor Amelia Lopez, but please call me Mrs. Lopez. I will be teaching you guys all about British Literature, and how famous poets expressed themselves through writing, " she said writing her name and the class course on the board. The class just watched her write in silence.
"Who can tell me what is poetry?" She asked the class. No one said anything. "Come on people, you have your own voice and opinions, we all are adults here, this class is not based on being right or wrong, it's how you can interpret poetry, " she informed.
At that moment, I did not know what poetry was. I did not know the definition of poetry. I did not know how to write a poem or how to express myself.
"Is it like being expressive?" a girl in the back of the class asked.
"Right, good, can anyone else give me your definition of poetry?" Mrs. Lopez said.
"Poetry can be abstract and aesthetic, poetry can be art, " a boy stated, sitting in the front row.
"Right, poetry can be anything you want it to be, it can be abstract, informative, scary, life experience, or artistic in its own way. We communicate through poetry, " Mrs. Lopez informed.
In the year 2016 was when I became known to poetry. I became intrigued by it. But when those students started speaking out about poetry and gave their interpretation of it. I envied that because I felt really dumb in that class. Everyone was communicating through poetry except for me. I felt like an outcast in that class. I did not know how to express myself through poetry. I was very outspoken in all of my other courses except for Literature. I did not start communicating through poetry until the next year reading my British Literature book at home in the summer. I was interpreting famous artist's poems in my own way.
I was saying to myself while I was reading and writing down my interpretations of other people's poems. "Why can't I start creating my own poem?"
That was when I started writing narrative poems. I started writing poetry rhymes when I begin listening to a lot of Tupac Shakur's albums. 2pac is my all-time favorite old school rapper. He is the king of hip-hop. When I saw the "All Eyez On Me" film at the theaters in 2017. That really got me inspired to write poems. 2pac was into Literature and Shakespeare. He was not just a rapper, he was a poet as well. He wrote poetry rhymes as a child. That is why 2pac inspired me to write poetry and that got me to express myself in everything I write.
I was once told by an art teacher that when we all create things, we should put our works out there. Show our talents to the world.
That is why I opened myself up to posting my poems on other poetry apps and websites besides Poemia. I use other apps such as Writco, Mirakee, Kavyam, Poems, Launchora, Twitter, Instagram etc... I publish my works on various types of websites and apps. I even publish my art artworks, drawings, paintings, comedy skit videos, and my comic books. Make your talents known of what God gave you.
