When I grew up I had many aspirations
Music and song, my inspiration
I was gonna be a singer, writer and dancer
Was gonna be the most sought after actor
But as the years progressed
I dreamt less
Cause I saw there was no hope
I'd never make it to the top
My colour was the enemy
That was all they could see
First I wasn't White enough
Now being black is tough
I always tried to fit in
But they say force is a sin
I was seen as a menace
As I suffered in silence
Nowhere left to turn
Everywhere I got burned
Stuck in the colour of my skin
Always somewhere in between
Trying to make peace with my complexity
I was dying to be free
I'm still a prisoner in my own country
But I've come to terms with being me
I am proud of who I am
Although life won't ever be the same
And with my deepest scar
I am Africa
