I love the book Wuthering Heights. I have reread it a million times since I was 15.
Heathcliff is depicted as being a dark and inhumane monster at best, incarnate evil. He was a man of stormy emotions. I gather he(and Catharine) might have had Bipolar, post-traumatic stress, and BPD, due to the abuse he sustained. Heathcliff also suffered from Narcissistic personality disorder. He was an orphan who was adopted by a wealthy man. Heathcliff was abused by the jealous son of a wealthy man where he now lived. He was despicable and bitter the embodiment of evil. The object to his affection was Catherine. Also the daughter of the wealthy man that adopted him. He claimed love for her. She was free-spirited and spoiled and beautiful motivated always by impulses. yet his commitment to his belief in a higher love does not seem to include forgiveness.
The major conflict in Healthcliffs supposed love for Catharine is that he can never have her, but he can never let her go. There is one part in the book where he says "drive me mad but do not leave me in the abyss where I cannot find you" His desire for Catharine becomes twisted and begins to consume him. Readers find it hard to relate and understand Heathcliff because he hates as deeply as he loves; therefore, he is despised as much as he is pitied.
