Part III
III. At the age of 13,
love was my mother.
"Change your profile picture
on Facebook,"
was what she told me.
"You look like your father."
My eyes. I inherited my father's eyes.
The small smiling kind.
That of the Chinese and Japanese.
The "asian eyes" said the society.
Since then, love would always
whisper in my ear,
"You look like me."
Her voice tasted bitter
in my ears.
Her words were like razor
slashing my eyes out of its sockets.
She would insist,
"You look like me."
She would tell her friends
I look like her.
I would shake my head
left and right.
But her words drowned me.
And one day I woke up.
In the mirror I saw my face
her words imprinted
on every inch of my face.
The girl staring at back at me,
wasn't my reflection.
It was my mother's.
It was love
as I was told.
