I wish I saved you

I wish I saved you
Three years have passed, a blur of pain,
I still can't grasp you're gone again.
My uncle, my shield in every storm,
Now just a memory, a fading form.

You made it better, chased the clouds away,
Why couldn't I save you, that fateful day?
Why did they break you, call you a mess,
When all you wanted was happiness?

The anger burns, a fire in my chest,
Was my love not enough? Put to the test?
Did you even feel it, did it reach your soul?
My heart shattered, leaving a gaping hole.

Seventeen, and lost everything it seemed,
My uncle's love, a vibrant, hopeful dream.
More than myself, I cherished you so,
You saw my worth, helped my spirit grow.

You always told me I was smart and strong,
Words my own mother rarely said for long. Why did you leave? The question haunts my sleep,
A promise broken, a secret I must keep.

Just hours before, I saw your face,
Praying for you, in that familiar place.
"His peace isn't here," I whispered low,
A knowing sadness, starting to grow.

I prayed for you, when I was lost and weak,
A love so strong, I couldn't even speak.
I wish I'd stopped you, held you close and tight,
And kept you here, bathed in my love's light.
I wish I could’ve saved you.
