With pride you walk your pampered, pedicured, pedigree;
You would not spare me a penny, a smile or even look at me;
Surely you should not judge me by the decrepit rags I wear;
By my fetid odor, my grimy face, my filthy unkempt hair;
But judge you do simply because I do not scrupulously comform;
To your ideals, your perceptions, your standards, your "norm;"
You think I desire the pitiful state of my miserable reality?
Which sensible soul wishes a life of hardship and hunger - indignity!
How easily Fate could have reversed
our roles;
Were it not for a Decree that prevented an exchange of our souls;
How easily I could have been you and you could have been me;
Thus my trial became your test. Ah! You're failing so wretchedly!
Look at me! A glance my way should engender some empathy;
But you continue your march with indifference, undeterred, disdainfully;
You cannot conceal your cruel contempt as your lips curl distastefully;
And your eyes belie your cold, cosmetic features as you turn away disgustedly;
I once had a wife and a darling daughter too, a modest home and a steady pay;
Until one unforgettable, misfortunate moment Fate snatched it all away;
Ah! How horribly heartless and hopelessly humorless living life can be!
On other occassions its heartening and hopeful - a patently perplexing irony!
So who knows someday my ill-fortune might miraculously turn;
And perhaps the normal life I crave for might unexpectedly return;
But to you I'm just an insignificance, an inconsequence - rejected at birth;
Alas! That the animal at the end of your leash is so much more than my worth!
