Let Go

Such fleeting pretence this life, (we)
holding onto it with single-minded intent;
grasping at it with both hands, but never
having the firmest grip, much like
plunging breakneck from a staggering
peak trying to establish the firmest hold
onto the weight of our impermanence.
(Yet) with stubborn conviction rejecting
the absolute truth of its indiscriminate
inevitability, its grave conclusion.
Have we intended a tender thought?
Our earthly existence slowly, certainly
slipping away through the cracks and
crevices of those lofty illusory towers,
through the fissures of those fallacious
fortifications that we have cautiously
constructed, in some such way, to help
us forget, to make us ignore the temporal
nature of our atrophic actuality.
Have we rendered a charitable smile?
We drift through this life like listless
leaves trapped in a wandering wind -
never truly knowing its bearing, unable
to escape the prison of its momentum,
and upon our release having to accept
(with hollow resignation) the course
through which it has taken us.
Our destinations ever uncertain, ever
disheartening.
Have we exchanged a kind word?
For (we) as men have made gods of men
and others we have denigrated to
wretched insignificance. While (we) as
men lavish in the seductive adornments
of this world while others supplicate in
earnest anguish for an expeditious
release from it.
Have we considered the hopeless heart?
Those insufferable truths.
Those damnable lies.
Such are the lives of men.
