Like the Cat in the Hat
Like the Cat in the Hat
I wear red, white and black
The title is in my name
And rhyming is my game
I step in loud, then vanish quick,
A little chaos, a clever trick,
Balancing worlds on a fragile line,
Making the messy feel almost fine.
But some days the hat slips,
tilts off to the side,
Not magic, not mischief—
just things I can’t hide.
My friends are my Things,
not just One, maybe Two,
But loud, chaotic hearts
that feel just like I do.
They laugh, they pull me
when I’m too far ahead,
They stay when my thoughts
get too loud in my head.
My family’s the house,
still, steady, and there,
Even when I rush in
with storms in the air.
They don’t always follow
the paths that I take,
But they leave the door open
for every mistake.
And the fish in the corner—
I hear what they say,
“Be careful, be quiet,
don’t drift far away.”
But I was not built
to be silent or small,
I’m the echo that bounces
off each painted wall.
I run, then I stop,
then I think way too much,
Replay every moment,
every word, every touch.
Some people are pages,
they turn, then they’re gone,
But their ink leaves a mark
that keeps lingering on.
And when the room quiets,
and laughter fades thin,
That’s when all of the noise
starts screaming within.
I pace through my thoughts
like a checkered-floor maze,
Lost in reflections
of past yesterdays.
I’ve worn painted smiles,
I’ve hidden the cracks,
Turned pain into rhythm
so it don’t fight back.
Juggled emotions
I couldn’t explain,
Called it performance,
but it still felt like rain.
My heart ticks loud
like a clock out of place,
Every second a memory
I cannot erase.
Still I grow, still I bend,
still unsure where I stand,
Not quite what they see—
but becoming who I am.
Not tidy, not perfect,
not wrapped in a bow,
More like a room
after all of the show.
But still I come back,
hat crooked, heart loud,
Standing alone
but inside of a crowd.
Because I’m not the mess,
not the fall, not the spin—
I’m the one who survives it…
and writes it within.
Disclaimer this poem was inspired by Dr. Seuss
I do not own “the cat in the hat”
I just made the poem from one of my favorite books and author
