Long Lost

For them to leave she opened the door
For their escape she flung the windows wide open
But it seemed there was no exit for these pains
Home for them seemed to be with her and in her
Cuddled with them when she went to bed
Wrestled with them at the break of first light
When the buzz of everyday overwhelmed her
She pushed them to dark crevices of her mind
When alone and in silence, she took a light to that crevice
She invited Peace for a walk and they came along too
The moonlight over the bridge, softly caressing the streams underneath
Like a weight shackled to her feet they pull her underwater
Her eyes sting with tears and fear and anxiety and regret
Her throat hurts and burns with a need to scream, scream for help
Her lungs desperately long for the fresh air of night one more time but is filled with burn after burn
Her brain, long gone before, finally shuts down
She was down too deep, she was gone too far, she was lost too long
The sound of a heartbeat, her faint heartbeat for the last time, was all she knew and heard
Alas, a win for pain and a loss for no one, not even she.
