"Looking Back"

I can recall my Dad
Laying on his bed in pain
Trying to watch his favourite actor
The late great John Wayne,
He was dying from
A deadly blood disorder
Past two score ten and five
This big man would get no older,
My Dad was an odd man
Affection he'd rarely show
Still from the age of three on
Be the only Dad that I'd know,
Narry does a day go by
That my Dad's advice I don't recall
He taught me that in any fight
To take one step back and stand tall,
Everyday I fight my addiction
My cravings for drugs and alcohol
Though I be only five foot four
No matter what I do I stand tall,
As I watch "They Were Expendable"
My Dad past and is no more in pain
He is quietly sitting by my side
Watching a man's man... John Wayne.
