Here lies a heart that was once whole and bright,
Whose light was snuffed out in the dead of night.
The one who held it close has gone away,
And left this shattered soul to mourn and sway.
The rose that bloomed so sweetly in the sun,
Has withered now that love's sweet race is run.
No more the laughter and the joyful cheer,
But only tears and sorrow now are near.
The world is but a shadow of its former self,
Deny me everything but love, and then nothing but sickness felt.
The days are long and dreary in my sorrowed heart,
And, verily, my days have all but been played out.
To mourn, to weep, to grieve, to feel bereft,
The soul doth yearn to hearken to sweet Death.
For there is none to ease the heart's sad pain,
But only in the grave can peace be gained.
The soul let go, the heart let still be kept,
The bones interred, the spirit now at rest.
For here shall rest a loved one, now passed on,
Until the day when we shall meet anon.
