if you were a love song
words and notes spread on a page
you'd be battle worn
the paper ripped in places
the ink running and starting to fade
you'd be stained with coffee
smudged with long shed tears
a melody quite haunting
and once held so dear
if you were a love song
your melody would be strained
some notes too tricky to manage
some lyrics wouldn't fit
and a strange refrain
no instrument would play you right
but acapella would sound cold
your bars and notes need accompanied
but by what,no one would know
if you were a love song, you'd be forgotten
a scrap of paper found just by chance
a melody too fast for pleasure
a beat too off for dance
you would have been left behind
and some would let you go
the notes too shrill or too bass
the melody refusing to flow
if you were a love song
I'd sing you every day
perhaps I'd get the lyrics wrong at times
my lack of skill would get in my way
but I would try in the morning
and I'd sing til the sun fades out
I'd strain for every note
I'd try til my voice gave out
I would relish your odd notes
even though some are out of key
I'd memorize your lyrics
they'd become a part of me
if you were a love song
you'd be a strange one, easy to get wrong
but even so, I'd try to get it right
you'd be my favorite song.
