loving an addict

I can see it coursing through your blood.
The you I fell in love with has shifted into a being only known by your true love.
You called me tonight and I could hear you put the bottle to your lips and the words spilled out.
Just another hour of rambling from a drunk man
After 10 years you would think I would learn.
Loving you has been the most difficult obstacle course of my teen/young adult years.
I remember the days we met. The you I fell in love with was 18 years old with his whole life ahead of him.
To me, a girl of 14, my innocence taken before I was ready found safety in the boy in study hall.
Your ocean blue eyes and soft voice a mere whisper trying not to get caught talking on that blue couch in the library.
I've been there. Through the tears, the yelling, the break downs, the break ups. Secretly loving you but needing to move on with my life.
I'm 27 now, and you're finally turning your life around. 13 years later you have found a girl to make you smile that smile i fell for all those years ago.
I found a man who's eyes are the same blue, but never lose focus.
You found a girl who's laugh you rave about when and if you happen to call.
I found a man who's hand fits in mine. But will never touch another woman.
You've moved on and so have i.
But no matter what you'll always be that 18 year old safety net who saved me from myself so many times.
