Frightened, friendless, forsaken in a foreign place where everyone heedlessly passed her by.
She was an inconsequence, an inconvenience, an irritation to those who met her eye.
She pleaded, "Pass me a penny! Some crumbs! Anything, that my hunger would constrain!"
'Tis the tragic tale, of that little girl so frail, remembered as, The Calamity of Mary Jane.
Born in squalor on the outskirts of an obscure, seedy coal-mining town.
Didn't know her father and her mum for debauchery and promiscuity was renown.
Their shack would be scrupulously cleaned before her mum returned from the scene of one of her licentious meetings.
Mum's meal would be ready as she'd totter in unsteady, and get a deft smack and a glob of spit as her daily greeting.
The treacherous torture, the severe trauma would continue until she came of age.
Then the 'uncles' began their visits and with her the most perverse acts engaged.
Still too young to understand the reasons for all this relentless misdeeds and gratuitous pain.
She'd crawl into the darkest corner and in a foetal position there until the morning remained.
Battered and bruised the physical abuse would continue until she no longer could stay.
Seeking some sort of salvation from her oppressive situation she decided to run away.
About a month later in a city that for millions could cater they found the body of this frail little girl.
Died of starvation, got no salvation, what a sad indictment of this apethetic, pitiless world.
So if again you should see a young soul begging on the street do not from your pockets abstain.
Take heed of the tale, of the young girl so frail, and be reminded of, The Calamity of Mary Jane.
