I am light-skinned
I am black
my blackness does not justify who i am
we have overcome alot of sh*t
but yet we are beaten by the words of others peoples hate
We may have no weapons
but in their eyes our skin is their fear
i am light-skinned and hated because YOU brought me here
You call me names and i can do nothing
because if we say something we are the ones who are disgusting
suddenly our behavior is unacceptable
but what about yours
why is it we get pulled over by you and you suspect we've done something when really we've done nothing but sit there in our skin
which seems to offend you
why is you cross the street when we walk down it
why is it you hold on to your purse in an elevator and move all the way against the wall
why do you hate us
we did not ask to be brought here
hatred has been passed down from generation to generation
the cycle needs to be broken
because when your kid calls us a n**** its because they heard it by you
racism is taught
our skin shouldn't automatically cause you to fear
it shouldn't stiffen your spine when we are near
Why do you look at us as if we've done something wrong
when we have done nothing
when our skin isn't our fault
but don't mistake me for thinking its a curse
i love my black skin
i know what i'm worth
