My Daughter

My Daughter
It was a beautiful summer morning,
birds and squirrels singing
in chirps and squeaks,
a prelude to a perfect day.

Silent prayers spilled from my lips,
palms held in tightened grips,
a single wish fixed in my mind.

Then a third note echoed,
the cry of a baby born,
and my heart sang in ecstasy.

My legs raced toward its source,
and there she was:
my joy in flesh and blood.

Cradled in her mother’s arms,
her eyes a mirror of wonder,
her face lit with an ethereal glow.

An angel sent from heaven,
a beacon in all my darkness.
And as I held her close,

I knew, from that moment and for all my days,
I would love her with all I had.
For she was my daughter.
