I don’t know who to blame the past or my parents
My parents never told me that my melanin is a crime
History is never corrected instead its praised
Honestly I live on earth but I feel like I don’t belong
I breathe, I eat, I sleep in fact I do all the things that a human should do
But my own species is rejecting me
Is it really a crime to be black?
Now I see my peers bleaching their skin just to fit in
How can you fit in anywhere if you can’t fit inside the globe?
I am scared to step outside
No…scratch that I am scared of being me
I am scared of everything that’s not like me
I embrace poverty because I was born in it
Just because I am poor doesn’t mean crime started with me
I know all those who died in the hands of the system
All those who were fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters
But I won’t mention their names because the wounds are still fresh in their families
It’s hard to sleep at night I think its insomnia because we have become friends lately
My heart is oozing blood of a thousand swords, see my mind, I won’t even go there
It’s like a maze I am lost in my own head
I don’t really fear dying poor my forefathers died with nothing but loyalty, yet they were robed
What I really fear is dying in the hands of the system just because of the melanin on my skin
My melanin is my skin and my skin is my melanin I won’t alter anything……….
