My Truth

Hiding the truth,
For so many years.
After a while,
You forget all the tears.
Keeping a secret,
From being so young.
Never once allowing,
A slip of the tongue.
Protecting my family,
From the trauma I battled.
What I didn't know is,
It would leave them so rattled.
More than a decade had passed,
And I never found my words.
It ended up taking,
An attempt to fly with the birds.
But when I found the light,
To guide me through.
It showed me how,
The world to view.
For the truth is pure,
But the truth is tough.
I've finally accepted,
That enough is enough.
So I will say my truth,
And shout it loud.
For a victim I am not,
But a survivor and proud.
