NNENNA : HER FATHER'S MOTHER

The adults were talking in the living room
And we were sent to our bedrooms
But curiosity wouldn't let me be
My feet pitter-pattered down the stairs
And my ear was soon at the door
I tried so hard to hear their discussion
Their voices had dropped into whispers
I began to think that maybe they knew
Maybe they could feel my presence
As I struggled to calm my nerves
Morning came, it couldn't have come later
I was wide awake all night long
With a million thoughts racing in my head
The house was as silent as a graveyard
With an atmosphere full of tension
A car came speeding down the road
The tense air got thicker and heavier
My parents were consoling themselves
For out of the car came my sister
Pregnant, holding the man she eloped with
My mother wept at the sight of her child
Her child that once was innocent
Now a young mother-to-be
But she was still happy to see her girl
My father had a forgiving look in his eyes
As his arms were spread wide open
To welcome back home his first girl
Glad she had returned to him unharmed
Nnenna, 'Her father's mother'.
