One Last Goodbye

One more try, one more tear
Before I finally let you go
So many years of loving you
For at least 40 more or so.

You helped me to live this life
My only one true friend
We both knew that at some point
One of our lives would have to end.

Now I feel your skin turn cold
Beneath my loving touch
I wish that I had never realized
How it could hurt so much.

So now I sit alone and cry
My body filled with pains and aches
You were my life, my everything
As the heart inside me breaks.

The doctors have dealt with this
So many times before
That it seems to me they treat
your death as if it were a chore.

Now I’m so old and crippled
That I cannot live alone
My children couldn’t deal with me
So they put me in a home.
Oh god Oh god remember me
When I pass on from this earth
And join me with my loving wife
As we laugh with joy and mirth.
