Our Last Summer

Our Last Summer

We watched the storms from our parents drive,

the sky split open fierce and wide.

I thought those nights would always stay,

but it was not meant to be that way

At the lake, I would cast my line,

your voice drifted soft and long.

I never knew how much I’d need

the comfort of your song.

In your kitchen, pans would hiss,

We watched movies- stayed up too late

I thought we had forever then,

but forever couldn’t wait.

March has taken you away,

That summer, tightly, holds me still.

I’d give anything for one more night—

I know I always will.
