Pieces

On the outside, the view looks the same
But on the inside, there is an emptiness
A big, black hole
A vacancy so deep and dark
It hides her smile
The smile that once adorned her face and lit up her eyes

Day after day she goes through the motions
Pondering feelings, confusion, grief
Peeling back the layers
And exposing the rawness of
The despair she feels inside

She is torn
Her soul aches
Her heart feels like it may truly break
There's no escape
How did she get to this place?

Tears fall from her dark eyes
She's not exactly sure for which reason this time, but they do
Blurring her vision
Drowning her

The pain becomes unbearable,
Squeezing the life right out of her
She stumbles
She crumbles
That fragile heart cracks into a million little pieces
Visible only to those who can see right through her

They hear her cry
They feel her pain
They wish they could pick up those pieces one by one,
And put that broken heart back together again
And dry those tears
But they can't

She can't swallow her sadness anymore
She knows she can't possibly bear another day hurting this way
Her fragile soul shatters and those pieces fall too, although silently
No one hears this time

So she is left all alone
Missing,
Wishing,
Remembering...
For the one she will forever love, belongs to another
She can't hold on
And she can't let go...

When a heart wants what it cannot have,
All that remains
Are the pieces left behind
