"Project Matters"

Where I'm from you get picked on by white cops
And they don't give no warning shots if you start running
Shouts to my boy they ran over just for serving
Growing up around crime you learn to carry a nine for surviving
If you gang related you're going to need something more heavy
Hanging on the block with two fortys one in hand and pocket
White chalk lines chocked out under the streetlight
Yellow tape hanging off of every single block pole
Helicopters coming shaking up the roof of my crib
Losing homie after homie to death or go do a bid
This is just life for the average ghetto hood kid
The project matters only when it doesn't
The project matters only when the news is present
The project matters to me but not you
Shits always going down around the spot
I watched men fall to metal beans from red beams
seen a lot of overdosing from the local dope fiends
nothing but hood rats and no minority queens
I was raised around thugs and hustlers cause fast money's what it brings
Ain't no body reading a book to busy on being the number one crook
We had chemistry but not like the ones in school
Learning how to mix baking powder and hot water
I ain't sharing no more ingredients
Slowly losing our innocence to this street science
Taught if I get caught to keep my mouth silence
Young and full of potential untill I started to dance with the devil
The project matters only when it doesn't
The project matters only when the news is present
The project matters to me but not to you
A child with a future but broken dreams
Seeing R.I.P of my friends names on the walls still stings
Getting second thoughts of what this life really brings
Surrounded by a city that's full of gritty and hatred
Anybody coming up causes jealousy cause they couldn't make it
Then it attracts those who envy and kill you simply for doing better
I sit back and wonder "why do we do this to each other?"
Couples fighting and fussing during the night hours
Dogs barking and police sirens this can't be my future
Thinking when I grow up I'm going to get it together
I don't want to be remembered as a veteran hood hero
Living by the beach peacefully is where I'd rather spend time
Hearing a shoot out going down in my complex
You wouldn't even understand what would have happened next
But I wounded up taking a stray one to the neck
Shaking on the floor, blood rushing, mother screaming
No father present cause he bounced at three
I wonder is anyone going to be able to save me?
Eyes rolling back and each breath is getting more heavy
I feel my lungs collapse and heart beat start slowing
Down my cheek from my eyes tears start flowing
Seeing everyone gathering around my body
A shame a kid in the slums can't think of being somebody
I feel my eyes rolling back behind my head
I heard the medics coming saying "out the way, out the way"
After five minutes of struggling he said "he's dead"
This is the only time the meidas going to care
It's not fair that we pull each other down
Killing off the children of the future
We need more peace and less violence
