Remembering Benedryl.

I knew you did it.
But you pretended I was wrong.
Like my memory deceived me.
I itched and itched, but you didn't want to deal with me.
To this day, I itch at the thought of you.
It's funny how anxiety has so many effects on the body.
You'd come into my room with a bottle of Benadryl.
You told me to drink it.
I used to have this nightmare on repeat of a man with a top hat and a trench coat.
He'd walk up these steps as dark as his silhouette.
Translucent purple squares of all shades surrounding the image.
I believed I was crazy and that my memory deceived me.
I believed you.
Until I realized that man was directly linked to benadryl overdose.
Yet another lie you had me fooled by.
Thanks, mom.
