Each writer's mind is a theater stage,
A repertory company inside, engaged
With players waiting to take their place,
To bring to life characters with grace.
Shakespeare's mind had a cast of twenty,
A troupe of players, each with plenty
Of depth and nuance, ready to perform,
To tell stories of love, death, and reform.
As writers age, they become more skilled,
At casting their players, each role fulfilled
With precision, each character distinct,
Their stories brought to life, evocative and succinct.
I too have my own repertory of players,
Ten or so, but each a masterful conveyer
Of their unique tales, with their own voice,
Their own quirks, their own sense of choice.
And as I write, they come alive,
Their words, their thoughts, their drive,
Guiding me through each page and line,
A cast of characters, always intertwined.
So let us writers continue to cast,
Our players, each one a story to last,
For they are the heart of every tale we tell,
Our characters, our players, our stories, they dwell.
