Runaway

It was hotter than Hell on that August day
When I left my room and ran away.
There’d be no more beatings
No more fights no more crying every night.

On the streets is where I made my life
No more parent’s constant strife.
There were those who’d take me in
Who made me live with them in sin.

I had to live like no kid should
Dealing and stealing all that I could.
Sometimes they would sell me too
To do those things no kid should do.
There are those things no kid should know
And places they should never go.
They’re not here for us to buy and sell
And it’s not our place to make their's Hell.

I got so damn tired of all the pain
What I thought I’d find I did not gain.
My mind was damaged so that all I could see
Was that there was nothing in this world for me.

So I struggled to live life every day
Until they came and took me away.
To a couple’s home is where I went
Despite my vigorous dissent.
There are those things no kid should know
And places they should never go.
They’re not here for us to buy and sell
And it’s not our place to make their's Hell.

But in time I came to realize
That when I hurt they heard my cries.
They tried to help me with the pain
So I could live my life again.

With them there was so much to do
We’d play at the park and visit the zoo.
I began to feel like a young teen should
All because they understood.

There are those things no kid should know
And places they should never go.
They’re not here for us to buy and sell
And it’s not our place to make their's Hell.

Now I’m old and they have passed
But they loved me to the very last.
It was hotter than Hell on that August day
When I left my room to run away.
