When they brought you home,
I turned away from you.
You didn’t belong
Within my empty worldview.
I had shown no lenience,
Unwilling to share my silver platter.
I saw you as an inconvenience.
Now, you’re the only thing that matters.
As I watched you grow,
My icy fortress started to melt.
I recognized in its glow
The purest love I’ve ever felt.
Our walks, how I chased you,
Your eyes, so full and sweet.
Every time I knelt and embraced you,
I dropped my ego at your feet.
To think the sand clock is breaking
Fills me with inescapable dread.
Now and again, I catch myself shaking,
Wishing for Death to take me instead.
You need only look back at me
For my eyes to overflow.
I know then that you’ll never leave,
In a way such as the wind blows.
You will live behind my eyelids,
Nuzzle up with me when I sleep.
Only then, in our peaceful silence,
All of our love we’ll get to keep.
