Shoes

sorry it's a bit long🥲
I remember the pretty shoes I saw in the display window
I gasped and squealed as I dragged him to see it too
I never said I wanted the shoes
I never even thought I needed the shoes
I just really liked how they looked
And I wanted him to smile at my silliness
And then it came
Our anniversary came and he handed me a pretty pink box
With a cute letter on it
I read the letter and kissed him lightly as tears streamed down my face
And to my surprise
The shoes I'd called pretty three months ago
were my present
I kissed him again and hugged him tightly
And cuddled with him that night
It was the happiest day of my life
And so I kept the shoes in their box
Waiting for the perfect moment to wear them
We had promised not to go to prom
Instead, we'd go on the most romantic date ever
From 5pm till midnight
He'd pick me up as usual and surprise me again
throughout
I picked out a pretty dress to match with my new shoes
I was so excited and couldn't wait to see his smile when he saw them on me
And then I got the call
There was an accident and it was critical
I didn't want to believe
That night of all nights
We were supposed to be happy together
forever
I never wore those shoes to that date
But I'll always remember the pink shoes in his funeral photographs
The shoes that stood out the most
The shoes that made the mourners stare
Today as I give these shoes to my daughter for her prom
And as I write this down
I hope she'd be happy
Happy that she's wearing the shoes
Her "father" got me
Happy that she's found someone she plans to grow old with
I'm glad I adopted her and we could live with the lie
The lie that we were married and she was our blessing
And reminder of our strong love
I'll never forget him
Because I'll always have his shoes
